Show • Mr. L. S. Hagen, President, Sacramento Chamber of Commerce, 116 Edith Avenue, Sacramento, California. Dear Mr. Hagen: 3 April 1944 In a vigorous effort to find a solution to a critically urgent and unsolved Army recruiting probiem, the help of a broad cross-section of the people of So.cratJ.ontct is being asked. The approach is again, and seemingly of necessity, through the good offices of our organized groups of ~~~!X type, including yours. The problem involves the urgent military need for greatly increased enlistments in the Women 1 s Army Corps. Memoranda relative to the need, qualifications and seemingly practical means of helpi..Ylg to ascertain the names of logical prospective recruits, are herewith attached. The thought is to ask every person to do just a bit, and through· broad coverage to attempt to gain our·end. The · understanding and wholehearted aid already provided has been, in truth, inspirational. These are the suggested steps: The President of the organization asks a potent member to present to the membership at the next meeting, the Army's critical need for greatly increased enlistments in the 1Vomen' s Army· Corps. lVI&"ly will be reached · directly and most effectively at the meeting, the balance perhaps by mail. The manner in which the brief, though serious, message is conveyed to the group is the very cr~~ of this appeal. One, and only one, follow-up is -suggested to those not responding, through reminder at the next meeting, by phone or by mail, or through organization letter or bulletin. With that, the ·program. ·is concluded. · ··. , _.j, .·In presentation, mention might also be made of ·the fact that thousands of America's finest women have responded to the call; that 50,000 WACs stayed in the Service when given opportunity for release; that they enjoy dignified, well supervised surroundings; that General Eisenhower's. secretary is a ~'lAC; and that i~ .this vwmen 1 s service, overseas travel is available, as well as one's choice ·of initial assignment to a job, station and branch of service within : t :he Ninth Service Command (8 VJestern States).
