Joseph Barton -- page 5 Oregon, Union Stake after its organization July 16, 1911. I was one of the seven presidents of that quorum until I was released on accounty of age and my home being at Baker, some fifty miles distant from LeGrande, stake headquarters. High Priest: On April 26, 1925 I was ordained a High Priest under the hands of President Hawks (Hauks) of Union Stake. Left Utah On Feb. 15, 1896 we left Utah and located in Baker, Oregon. We arrived there Sunday, Feb. 16, 1896 and began service with the Sumptor Valley Railway Co. The railway at that time extended from Baker to McEwen, a distance of some 23 miles. During that year I was locating and construction engineer for an extension of the road some six miles to Sumptor. This was completed Oct. 31, 1896. Since then and up to the present time I have been connected with the Sumptor Valley Railway Co. as general passenger and freight agent, claims agent, general superintendent and etc. I was practically everything except President and General Manager and am now retired from active service with the title of Special Representative and have a life pension. At present I am checking up on titles to right of way for the company. Oregon Lumber Co. Beginning in 1896 on my arrival at Baker, Oregon I have had mote or less to do with the land matters of the Oregon Lumber Co. and am now head of the Land Dept. -- checking up and perfecting faulty land titles, checking and adjusting taxes and assessments, looking after and designing its land records and land leases. I have designed and put into effect a system of land records that are considered by those who understand such matters as almost perfect. LaGrande '· Sugar Co. During the years 1898 and 1899 I had charge of the operation as superintendent of the LaGrande Sugar Company. This was in addition to my duties as Superintendent of the Sumptor Valley Rialway and the Oregon Lumber Co. land matters. Mary L. Barton wrote this last page: Joseph Barton, after a brief illness, passed away at 4:50a.m. Dec. 7, 1934. A funeral service was held at Baker City, Oregon on Friday, after which the body~ accompanied by his daughter Hattie and son-in-law Rider, left for Kays­ville, Utah. The body lay in state over Saturday night in the home of Albert B. Barton. The funeral was held Sunday at 2 o'clock in the Kaysville Tabernacle and interment was in the Kaysville-Layton Cemetery Dec. 12, 1934.
