The Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Phillips Camp biographies (circa 1940-1974) is a collection of biographical sketches of Utah pioneers submitted to the Phillips Camp, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, in Kaysville, Utah. The individual sketches give insight into the socioeconomic status of European, as well New World, converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during the nineteenth century. They contain biographical and genealogical information, as well as descriptions of experiences crossing the Atlantic to America and traveling across the plains to Utah. Minute details of pioneering life in Davis County, Utah, and other frontier outposts of settlement are illuminated. Described also are individual occupations and survival techniques along with information on offices held in, and services to, the church and the community. Show SKETCH OF ROSA ELLEN WEBB BARNES Rosa Ellen Webb Barnes, daughter of Edmund and Sarah Mathew Webb was born in Sawston Cambridgeshire, England August 14, 1850. When but a small child she emigrated to America with her parents on the sailing vessel, Ziba Golconda, landing at New Orleans, came up the Mississippi River to Keokuk, Iowa. It was said that Rosa Ellen and a pig were the only ones on the ship that were not sea sick . She crossed the Great Plains, with her parents in Clauc1us V. Spencer's Company. They arrived in Salt Lake City, September 19, 1853 . She accompanied her parents to Carson Valley, Ne~ada , also in the Move South. She was active in service when quite young, standing on a box to wash the stockings bn wash day, going on the range, barefooted to get the milk cows , often times returning after dark without finding them. The range spoken of was what is now know as Layton, West Layton, and Clearfield.! At about the age of fourteen years het Mother pas~ed away, leaving her to help her Father to take care of a family of two boys and two girls beside herself. This was a great responsibility for one so young . In about a year and a half her Father married again. Rosa Ellen remained at home taking her sha~e of the work , being the eldest she assisted in and out doors . At the age of twenty she was married to William Barnes, the son of William Fefferies Barnes, March 7 , 1870 in the Salt Lake Endowment House by Daniel H. Wells. -- This couple rented a farm in the North East part of Kaysville on which was a two roomed log house with a dirt roof , later they built an adobe house, where the home of John W. Burton now stands . Tne farm was· owned by John R. Barnes, an Uncle of William Barnes . They were born to them twelve children; Owen Edmund , Oscar, Sarah, Fr·ances, William, Richard. Willard , Charles John, James Mary Ellen, Priscella, Louis and Isabell Ann . Six of these children and the husband died in Kaysville. Just previous I to his death the husband had bought a farm in Idaho in hopes of helping |
