| Description |
The Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Phillips Camp biographies (circa 1940-1974) is a collection of biographical sketches of Utah pioneers submitted to the Phillips Camp, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, in Kaysville, Utah. The individual sketches give insight into the socioeconomic status of European, as well New World, converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during the nineteenth century. They contain biographical and genealogical information, as well as descriptions of experiences crossing the Atlantic to America and traveling across the plains to Utah. Minute details of pioneering life in Davis County, Utah, and other frontier outposts of settlement are illuminated. Described also are individual occupations and survival techniques along with information on offices held in, and services to, the church and the community. Biographies include: Mary Sims Allen (1847-1925), 1 page; William Allen (1849-1928), 2 pages; Anthone Edward Anderson (1839-1906), 2 pages; Pernilla J. Show Joseph Barton -- page 2 stopped opposite to where the Band was standing serenading the train crew. We were ·. invited to "get aboard". This we did and as the train again slowly moved westerly as fast as the rails were being laid, we moved with it and the old Kaysville Brass Band has the honor, yes the sole honor, of riding into the Great Salt Lake Valley on the first railway train and on the first rails that entered the valley •.. the band playing all the time. Marriage On Monday April 5, 1869, I married Mary Ann Allen, daughter of Robert and Leah (Harmon) Allen, late of London, England. We were married by President Daniel H. 1 Wells in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City, Utah. Our Children She is the mother of our children: Marintha Alberta, Charles Harman, Clarence Elmer, Hattie Josephine, Edna Maud, and Roy Allen Barton. Engineering Work My first work in engineering I did early in 1865 when I was not yet 17 years of age. I located and engineered with an ordinary mechanic's level. The ditch yet in use for irrigating purposes, heading in Haight's Creek, a short distance east of the present Main or County Highway in Kaysville was one of my first projects. bn Monday August 2, 1869, I was elected County Surveyor of Davis County~ Utah and served as such, term after term, until 1890 when I moved out of the County ~nd made my home in Ogden City, Utah. Hooper Canal In 1872 I was consulted as to the advisability of changing the head of the Hooper Canal in Weber County, ·Utah. The high waters of the Weber River caused !.trouble by w~shing out the headgates. I advised and moved the head of the carial about a half mi~e up the river and established the headgates above the then Utah Central Railway, now the Ogden Short Line. There has been no trouble since this change. Davis and Weber Counties Canal Beginning in 1881 and until its completion I was locating and consulting engin-leer of the Davis and Weber Counties Canal. This canal heads some 4000 feet above the mouth of Weber Canyon in Davis County, Utah and extends on a general westerly direction some nine miles where it is divided into three branches, one leading northerly. The main canal was 20 feet wide at the bottom and carried three feet in depth of water. In 1872 or 3, I'm not sure as to the year, I designed and supervised the construction of the first Howe Truss Bridge one hundred feet span crossing the Weber River in Weber canyon just~elow Devil's Gate, connecting Davis and Weber Counties. |
