| Description |
The Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Phillips Camp biographies (circa 1940-1974) is a collection of biographical sketches of Utah pioneers submitted to the Phillips Camp, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, in Kaysville, Utah. Show was one of the early dentists in t he community, serving the people i n his home day or ni ght for many years. An incident is related by one of his early patients showing his generosity and kindness. "In the winter of 1881 Joseph Jarman, then 1 4 years of age, arrived in Kaysville, He had been suffering for several days with a terrible toothache, and his face wa s all swollen and misshapen. His neighbors, anxious to he:g;:p him, said, •Go down to John Barton 's. He will pull your tooth for a quarter.' Where in the world be ·obtained a whole shilltng be never knew; nevertheless he did have the tooth extracted and paid Mr. Barton the money . "Two days later John Barton found where Joseph was staying and went to see him . 'My boy, I hear you are a young immigrant just over from England. Is that righ t?' 'Yes, that is ri ght,' said Joseph. ' Here then,' said John Barton, "take your quarter back . I am sure you need it much more than I do • 111 Like many of the pioneers , he gathered herbs and from them produced his own medicines. His cough remedy was e s pecially recommended and sought after in the community. In 1868, he was appointed sexton of t he city cemetary, an office he held for 48 years or until he died. It was well known that whatever John Barton did, he did well, and the cemetary was one of these examples. Much of its beauty of landscaping and well-planned appearance is due to his care and foresi ght and remains as a monument to him today~ Throu ghp~t his entire life, he devoted his time and talent, which were many, to the bu ilding of his community and to the advancement of the Gospel and church he had espoused. He served the city and community in many capacities and was always re ady to do hi s part and more in building and making public improvements. 2 |
