One snall but complete papyrus scroll still bears its original clay seal; and a parchment Qur*an leaf in ancient Kufic script appears to be one of the oldest in that category. There are numerous datad documents of medieval origin, which» it is hoped» will see the light some day when a qualified papyrologist is recruited for the Center facuity» 4 Our Qur'anic collection of manuscripts has systematically been supplemented by many standard printed editions from Egypt, Turkey, Irán, Iraq and Morocco* Soma of these ara sumptuous productions which will occa* sionally form part of our rotating exhibits» Furthermore>we were the first academic institution in the United States to obtain complete sets of the Chanted Qurfan from the Higher Council of Islamic Affairs in Cairo. One set consists of forty-two long-play records read by Shaikh Mahmud al- Husari according to Hafs, familiar to Egypt and Egyptian Muslims* The other coraprises sixty-seven long-play records read by the same recordar according to Warash, in the manner of North África, As late-comers on the scene of Middle Eastern Studies, we could not |
