Show -6- The Center has also been collecting as much information as it can on patterns of use to help in selecting the titles to be added. A union list of the members* holdings, as reported to Chemical Abstracts, has been compiled with the titles arranged in order by the number of members holding the title. This list was computer compiled for use by Chemical Abstract Service. The most widely held foreign language title on this list turned out to be Acta Chemica Scandinavica. Other interesting data from this computer listing are the following: Of the approximately 14,000 currently published titles abstracted by Chemical Abstracts, no member library reporting has more than 5,159. The average member reporting is receiving only 2,250 of these titles. Of the 3,584 titles published in the U.S., Great Britain, and Canada: (a) About half show only fifteen or fewer locations among the members. (b) 282 titles are held by no member library. Of the 9,416 titles published in countries other than the U.S., Great Britain, and Canada: (a) About half show only one, or no locations among the member libraries. (b) 2,686 titles are held by no member library. These data, plus data on frequency of citation and frequency of request on Interlibrary Loan, will help the Center to select the titles that will most effectively help the members with both their budget and service problems. |
