Show -4- Charter Night On September 22, in the Fine Arts Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. This first event of the new Friends organization was well attended and featured Dr. James D. Hart, Director of the Bancroft Library, University of California (Berkeley), as speaker. Dr. Hart gave an outline of the history of book bequests and the formation of what are now the great libraries of the world from such small seeds. He indicated that Friends organizations are in the mainstream of this tradition; a tradition which includes such names as Thomas Bodeley, John Carter Brown, and John Jacob Astor--to name a few. Following Dr. Hart's address, Miss Afton Forsgren was installed as Chairman and, as her first act, presented honorary memberships and certificates on behalf of the Board to three men to whom the Libraries will be forever indebted--Mr. Marriner S. Eccles, Mr. J. Willard Marriott, and Mr. Obert C. Tanner. Mr. Marriott was unable to attend so Dr. Clark Young, a Board member and personal friend, accepted the honor for him. Refreshments were served following the meeting. Next Meeting The next meeting of the Friends will take place at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, November 16, in the Marriott Library Auditorium. At that time, Dr. Everett L. Cooley, University Archivist, will present "An Evening With Special Collections". Many of the Library's finest treasures may be viewed at that time and we urge that all members make every attempt to be present. We know that it will be a most enjoyable evening. ROGER HANSON BECOMES ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR The Marriott Library was without an Associate Director for 2% months following David Laird's departure to accept the position of Director, University of Arizona Libraries, in July. During that time--and even before--a search was undertaken among the best librarians in the country to fill this position. The result was the hiring of Mr. Roger K. Hanson as Associate Director beginning September 15, 1972. Mr. Hanson, Director of Libraries for the University of North Dakota for three years, received his library degree from the University of Denver in 1966. Prior to that time, he was a mathematics instructor and librarian at two North Dakota high schools before accepting the position of Circulation Librarian (and then Acquisitions Librarian) at the University of North Dakota. He moved to the University of Minnesota as Assistant to the Director of Libraries for 2% years following the granting of his degree in librarianship. Mr. Hanson was Chairman of the North Dakota Governor's Advisory Council on Libraries and is a member of the Buildings & Equipment Committee of the American Library Association. His eleven-year association in the library profession will do much to provide guidance and assistance to Dr. Brigham D. Madsen, Director of Libraries. |
