Show ' -2- - LEVEY COLLECTION ARRIVES Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Aziz S. Atiya, the Marriott Library has become the repository of yet another outstanding collection of materials. The Martin Levey Collection, containing some 3,000 books, 5,000 off prints, and 1,000 manuscripts on microfilm in the history of science, was provided to the library by Dr. Levey's widow. Dr. Levey was one of those rare geniuses who had a command of 26 languages and was fluent in most of them. Many of these were ancient languages, such as Sumerian, Akkadian, Urdu, Persian and others. This knowledge enabled him to work in areas that were highly specialized and to synthesize the thought of many cultures-particularly in the area of medical history. He was a professor in the history of science at New York University (Albany) . One quarter of the collection is written in Arabic and these volumes, along with eleven of Dr. Levey's unpublished manuscripts, are the most valuable portion of the gift. As is the policy with most large libraries, the collection will not be separately maintained, but will be integrated with other library holdings. Unique items will, of course, be safeguarded. A separate catalog for the collection will be maintained in the Middle East Department. FRIENDS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH LIBRARIES On May 24, the initial Board of Directors meeting of the new, revitalized "Friends of the University of Utah Libraries" took place in the Conference Room of the Marriott Library. Prior to that meeting there had been considerable planning by the Library Staff. Thirty libraries--both large and small--were approached to determine how their Friends groups were organized, whether they were believed to be effective, and what kind of programs were appealing to the membership. The staff extracted what was thought to be the best from each response and built a new constitution to reflect this advice. Concurrent with the gathering of this information, a Board of Directors was sought. Active, involved, book-oriented persons, who were prominent in the community were approached. The final result was a Board that reads like a Who's Who in Utah: Miss Afton Forsgren, Chairman; Dr. Theron S. Parmelee, Vice-Chairman; Mr. David L. Freed; Mr. Paul Haglund; Mrs. Joy T. Hashimoto; Mrs. Pearl Jacobson; Mrs. Elizabeth Montague; Mr. Ben M. Roe; Mr. Keith Wallentine; Mrs. Oma E. Wilcox and Dr. Clark Young. In addition, the Director of Libraries, Dr. Brigham D. Madsen, holds an ex-officio seat and the Secretary-Treasurer, always a member of the library staff, is Mr. August Hanniball, Extension Librarian. The tentative constitution and by-laws were discussed by the Board at their first meeting and their suggestions were incorporated in a final draft. Some of the major sections of this document follow: 1. The membership year shall coincide with the calendar year. 2. The annual meeting shall take place within 60 days of March 15th and new candidates for office shall be elected at that time. They shall assume office on July 1st. 3. Officers hold office for one year and may only succeed themselves one time for the same position. |
