Show REPORT OF THE COMMISSIONER OF INDIAN AFFAIRS. LVII REMOVAL OP NEZ P E B C ~IN~D IANS PROM INDIAN TERRlTORY TO NEZ PERC* AND COLVILLE AGENCIES. Under the appropriatibn-made available in the aot of March 3d last, for the rernoval of the Nez P e r 4 Ir~disnsi n the Indian Territory to some other location, and in accordance with your authorily of May 17 last, one hundred and fifty of said Indians, including men, women, and children, have been removed. to and located at the Oolville Agency in Washiugton Territory ; and the remainder, one hundred and eighteen in ali, are now located with their friends and relatives at the Nez Perc6 Agencg in Idaho.. The reason for sendiug these Indian$ to.two separate agencies was partly on account of their own desire in the matter, but principally on account of indictments said to be pending in Idaho against Chief Joseph and some of his immediate followers, for muiders committed by them before their removal to the Indian Terri,tory in 1878, and numer-ous threats that were made that, in the event of their return to Idaho, extreme measures wouLl be taken by the citizens to avenge the wrongs alleged to have been perpetrated by these people over eight gears ago. As a precautionary measure to secure safetx and protection for the Indians m route to Idaho and Washington Territory, the honorable Secretary of War issued the requestcd'orders for a sufficient force of troops to he in readiness to meet any en~ergenuiest hat might grow out of the movement, and uuder the immediate supervision of' Dr. W. H. Faulkner, the special agent appointed for the purpose, the removal to the two agencies aforesaid wa8 accomplished 'without difficulty, and the Indians were received at bot,h agencies with kindness and cordial-ity. The re~novaa was entirely satisfactory, and all parties concerned appear to be contented Gith their new homes. The total cost to the Government in connection with the removal, including transportation, subsistence, and pay and expenses of the special agent, atuonnts to $11,354.01. I will add that in the spring of 1883 thirty-three Nez PeroBs, ~nostly destitute widow8 aarid orphans, were removed, uuder the supervision of James Reubens, from the Indian Territory tothe Nez Perc6 Agency in Idaho. The authority for thi8 removal was granted with the under-standing that it would be no expense to the Qoverument, but it ap-' pears that in the act approved J u l 4~, 1884, Oongress made an appro-priation of $1,625 to reimburse Mr. Reubens for expenses incurred in connection with this removal, which anrount has been paid in full. REXOVAL OP THE TONRAWAS. he Ton'kawa Iudiaus, who were removad,from the State of Texas during the month of October, 1884, to the Iowa Reservation in the In-dian Territory, were in June lastremoved to the Oliklaod Reservation . in that Territoiy which had just been vacated,by the removalof the Nez Perds, above referred to.
