THE movement of population, native as well as foreign, on this continent is greater at this time than at any former period in our national history. To investigate the causes of this mighty migration does not come within the scope of my present purpose. It is sufficient to know that such is the fact. To meet the demand which everywhere exists amongst_ this migratory population for cheap, reliable information in regard to our trans-Mississippi and extreme Western territory, this Guide and HandBook: to the Great West has been prepared. In 1855, and subsequently until the outbreak of the present rebellion, the author of this little work has been known to the westward bound emigrant through the pages of "HoI for the West;" an annual publication which obtained a wide circulation before the war. Indeed, the growing favor with which that work was received, and the demand made for the following articles as they originally appeared in the pages of the " Tribune," have induced their republication in this form.
