Show Jill Lewis and Cla1·kc's ~.:cpedition the mountains: it is also divided by a number of islands some of which a1·e large ncar the northern shore. 'l'lw soil of the valley is a rich black loam apparently very Jertilc, and cove1·ed with a fine gt·cen gt·ass aL)Out eighteen inches or two feet in height; w hilc that of the high grounds is }lerfectJy d•·y aml seems scorched by the sun. rrho timber though still scarce is in greater (}Uantities in this vaUey than we have seen it since entering tbc mountains, and seems tu prefer the borders of the smn.ll creeks to the banks of the river itself. )Ve advanced thl'ce and a. half mi1rs in this valley and encamped on the left side, having matlc iu all fifteen and a half miles. Oue only hu·g·e game to~day was one deer. We saw however two pheasants of a clad~ bt·own colour, much larger than the same SI>ccies of lJird .in the United States. In the moruing too, we sa.w thr·ec swaus whtch, like the geese, have not yet recovered the feathers or the wing, aml "ere unable to fly: we killed two of them, and the third csca1lcd by diving and passing down the cul'l'Cilt. 'l'hesc arc the lirst we ha\e seen on the river for a great distance, and as they had uo young with them, we tn·esume that they do not breed in this neighl>oudwod. Of the geese we daily see gt·eat numbers, with their young llerfectJy fcathCl·cd except on the wings, where both young and old are de1icient; the .ftrst are very iine food, lJut the oltl ones a 1·c poo1• and uniit for use. Several of the large lH·own or sandhill crane are feeding iu the low gt·ounds on the gt·ass which fo1·ms their pi·incipal food. 'l'he young crane cannot :t1y at this season: they are as la•·ge as a turkey, of a bright t•cdd• ·h bay colour. Since the rivet· has bc<'ome shallow we have caught a number ot" trout to-day, and a Hsh, white on the bell.r and sides, but of a bluish cast on the back, and a long poiuted mouth opening somewhat like that ol'thc shad. 'rbis morning captain Ularke wishiug to hunt but fear· ful of alarming the Indians, went up the river for three miles, when liuding ueitbcr any of them nor of their recent Uj) the .JJfissou1·i. 315 tracks rcturnc•l, antl then his Jittle party separatcll to look for game. l'hl')' killell two bucks all(l a doc. and a) oung cUt·lcw ncal'ly 1(~athl'l'ed: in the evening they found the musquiioes as tt·ouhl rsom (.~ as we <Ud: these animals attack us as soon as th~ la.IJoua•s and fatigues of the day require some res1. and auuoy us till scvet·al hoUI·s after daa·k, when the eoldncs · of the air obliges them to disappear; but such is their persecution that were it not for our biers we should 9btain no repose. Monday. 22. 'Ve set out at an early hour. The river being divi;led into so many channels by botltlargc and small islands, that it was impossibln to lay H down accur·ately l>y following in a. canoe any single chann<'l, captain Lewis walked on shore, took the geum·al eourscs of tho river, and f 1·om the t·ising grounds laid down the situation of the islands and channels, which he was cnahled t.o do with perfect accuracy. the ' 'icw not being obstl'lteted by mueh timber. At one mile and a quarter· we passed an island some· lvhat larger tlmn the rest, ancl fone miles t'ut•ther 1·eached the uppc•· cud or auothc•·, on which we breakfasted. 'rhis is a large island fo1·ming in the middle of a bend to the north a level fct·lilc plain ten feet aheve the su1·facc of the water and never overflowed. ]Jc•·c we found g•·cat quantities of a small onion about the size of a musket ba.ll, tl10ugh some wca·c hu·ger; it is white, Cl'isp, ami as well .flavoured as any of our ;;ar·dcn onions; the seed is just J•ipening, ami as the })lant bears a laq;c fluantity t~ the ~quat'C foot, and stands the t•igOUI'S o[' the climafc, it Will. no doubt l>c an acquisition to settlers. I~"'rom this p•·oductwn we called it Onion island. Dut·ing the next seven anti Ou~cc quarlf'r miles we passed sevct·al loug ci•·cular hcnds. and a. numbct• of lat'ge and small islands which divitl(• the river into ma.ny channels, and then !'cached the mouth or a eret·k on the nol'th side.
