The .thunder and lightning of tl:}e last evening was vwlent, a singular occurrence for the time of year; the loss of my thermomcte1· I most sincerely regret. I am confident that the climate here, is much warmer than in the same parallel of latitude on the Atlantic ocean, though how many degrees it is now out of my power to determine. Since our arrival in this neighbourlJOod on the 7th of November, we have experionccd one slight white frost only, which happened on the morning of Lhe 16th of that month; we have yet seen no ice, and the weather is so warm, that we are obliged to cure our meat with smoke and lire to save it; we lost two parcels by dependin~ on the air to preserve it, though it was cut in very thin slices, and su!EcientJy exposed. Various flies and iusccts now ali,•e and in motion. The wind from any quarter off the land or alon o- the b nonhwest coaH, causes the air to uecome much cooler; every species of water fowl common to this country at any season of the year, s till continue with us. 'V cathet· perfectly tempet·ate, I never experienced a winter so warm as the present has been. 'Vhen the sun is said to shine, or the weather fair, it is to be understood that it barely casts a shadow, and that the.atmosphcrc is hazy, of a milky white colour. |
