Show Lewis an(l Cla1·ke' s Expedition reason may be found in th<'ir feal' of li he Snake Indians; be tween whom and themselves. (•.onsiderin~ the warlike tern· pel· of that peoplt> .• and the pt'aceful habits of the river tribes, it is very natural that the latter should be anxious to interpose so ~;ood a. barrier. These Indians are descri. bed as residing on a great river to the south. and always at war with the people of this neighbourhood. One of our chiefs pointed out to-day a spot on the left. where. not many years ago, a great battle was fought, in which numb~rs of both nations were killed.- We were agreeably surpl'iscd this evening by a present of some very good beer, made out of the remains of tl1e bread, composed of the Pasheco· qut\mash, part of the stot·es we had laid in at the head of the Kooskooskce, and which by f1·equent exposure become sour and moulded. At the distance of two miles below, are five more buts; the inhabitants of which are all engaged in llrying fish, and some of them in their canoes killing fish with gigs; opposite to this establishment is a small island in a bend towards the right, .on which there were such quantities of fish that we count· ed twenty stacks of dried and pounded salmon. This small island is at the upller )lOint of one much larger, the sides of which are high uneven rocks, jutting over the water: llet'e there is a bad rapid. The island continues fo•· four miles. and at the middle of it is a large river, which ap· prars (o come from the southeast, and empties itself on the left.
