Indeed, it is not common to finu any two bears of the same colour, ami if the diflcrcnce in co\om were to constitute a distinction of species, the number wouhl increase t.o almost twenty. Soon after they killed a fcmalo bear with two cubs. 'l'he mother was black, with a considerable intermixture of white hairs and a white spot on the breast. One of the cubs was jet bhwk, and the othct· of a light reddish b1·own, or bay colour. The foil of these varie-gated bears, at·c much finer, longet·, and more ahuntlant than that of the common black beat·: but the most triking diflcrencc between them is, that the former a.t·e laq;cr, have louget• tusks, and longer as well as blunter talons; that th('y prey mol'e on other animals; that they lie neither so long not• so closely in whlter qua1·tcrs, and uevet· climb a tree, howevet• closely pressed by th<' hunters. This variegated bear, tlwugb specificalJy the same with those we met on the Missouri, are by no means so fet•ocious, p•·obaiJiy, IJe<·ausr of the scarcity of game, and the habit of living on roots ma~ have weaned them f•·om the practices of attacking and de- · vouring animals. Still, however, H10y at·c not so passive a. t~lC common black bt·ar, whi~lh al'l' also to be found hm·c; lo1 they have already fought with our huntct·s, though with less fury than those on the other side of the mountain. They immediately }H'qJarrtl a large flt·e of dried wood, on which were thrown a number of smooth stones ft·om the river. As soon as tl1c Ht·c went down, and the stones Wei·c heated, they wct·e Jaid next to each ot lu~r, in a level position, and covered with a quantity of branches of pine, on which WCI'C placed flitches of the beat·, and thus placing the . boughs and flesh alternately fot• scvct·al com·ses, leaving a. thick layer of pine on the top. On this hcall was then pour· cd a small quantity ot' watct·, ami the whulc covel'ed with earth to the dc1Hh of lout• inches.
