Show 504 INSECT A. no hook at their extremity, or but a very small one( 1 ), and that of II YLoBius, where there is a very strong one at their inner extre. mity(2). Among the species of the first, one is found on the Tamarisk,-C. tamarisci, Fab., which for beauty of colours rivals the most splendid exotics. It is the type of Schrenherr's genus Coniatus. . The others, whose mandibles have three or four teeth, present a mentum abruptly narrowed near its superior extremity, tt·uncated and with scarcely perceptible pal pi. Their antennre terminate almos~ gt·adually in an elongated fusiform club. The body has frequently a similar figure. Olivier confounded them with the Lixi, from which in fact they differ but little. They will compose the subgenus CLEONus(3). The Longirostrcs, or those whose antennre are inserted beyond the origin of the mandibles, and frequently near the middle of the proboscis, which is usually long, comprise, with some exceptions, the genus Lixus, Rhyncluenus, and Calandra of Fabricius. In the two first the antennce present ten joints at least, but most commonly deven or twelve, of which the three last at least form the club. L1xus, Fab. The Lixi almost resemble the C Ieoni in their organs of manducation, as well as in the elongated fusiform club of their antennre, thenar· row and elongated figure of their body, and the armature of their tibire. The L. paraplecticus, whose larva lives in the stem of the Phellandrium and produces in Horses which swallow it with the plant the disease called paraplegia, is almost linear. Another species, for which a particular genus-Rhinocillus-has been formed on ac· count of its having but very slightly geniculate antennre, is reputed an odontalgic( 4). RuYNCHJENus, Fab. The Rhynchceni present no such ensemble of characters. ( 1) Refer to it the genera .B.terpus, Listroderes, Gronops, Phytonomus, Coniatlll, of Schcenherr. (2) To his Hylobii, add also the genera Lepyrus and Chrysolopus. (3) To this genus of M. Schcenherr, add the following: Pachycerus, MettUpU Rltytideres, Stenocorhinus. (4) The genera Rhinocillus, Lachnreus, Nerthops, Larinus, Lixus, Pacholenw of Schcenherr. The sexual organs of the Lixi presented c11aracters toM. Dufou not observed by him in any other Coleoptera. COLEOPTERA. 505 Sometimes the legs are contiguous at base, and there is no sternal fossula for the r~ception of the proboscis. · Some never leap, and their antennre are composed of eleven or twelve joints. These are winged. TAMNOPHILUS. The Tamnophili, in which the antennce are but slightly geniculate sh~rt, composed of twelve joints terminated by an oval club· a d h . . . ' n placed on a s ort, proJectt~g, and but slightly arcuated proboscis, where the eyes are approximated superiorly, the extremity of the abdomen is exp~sed, and t?e tibire are armed at the extremity. with · a stout hook, wtll form tlus first subgenus; which we must distinguish from that of Rhinus (Rhine), with which Olivier and myself confounded it( 1 ). Other Rhynchreni are remarkable for their arcuated tibire, furnished with a stout hook at the end; their tarsi are long filiform ~ut scantily ?rovi~ed with ha~rs beneath, and the penulti~ate join; u but very httle dtlated and s1mply cordifo1~m. :J'hey II compose the subgenus BAGOUS. Small Insects which are found in marshes(2). Some others with the same habits are removed from their congeners by their tarsi, of which the penultimate joint completely encloses the last between its lobes. The last one is frequently destitute of hooks. They will be comprised in the s~bgenus BRAOHYPUS( 3 ). In that of BALANINUS, We find very singular Rhynchophora; their proboscis is at least as long as the body, and sometimes much longer. The larva of one species-Rhynchrenus nucum, Fab.-feeds on the filbert( 4). That of RuYNOH..IENUS proper Only differs from tpe preceding subgenera in negative characters, (l) The genera Lremosaccus, Tamnvphilus of the same. (2) The genera Bagous, Hydronomus, Lyprus, of the same. . (3) The genera Brachypus, Brachonyx, Tanysphyrus, .B.noplus, of Schcenherr. (4) The genera BalaninU$, .B.ntliarhinus, Erodisczta, of the same . VoL. Ill.-3 0 |
