Show NEURO- OPHTHALMOLOGY AT LARGE Second Congress of the Asian Neuro- Ophthalmology Society, Nagoya, Japan, October 15- 16, 2004 Thirty members of the Asian Neuro- Ophthalmology Society ( ASNOS) met in Nagoya, Japan on October 15 and 16, 2004 for the Second Meeting of this society. The meeting was held jointly with the 42nd Meeting of the Japanese Neuro- Ophthalmology Society ( JNOS), with 423 members of the JNOS in attendance. There were ASNOS delegates from Indonesia, India, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, China, and the Philippines. Having met originally in 2002 in Tokyo, the ASNOS is being nurtured by the Japanese neuro- ophthalmologists, among them Akio Tabuchi, MD ( Okayama, Japan), the current president of ASNOS, and the meeting organizer, Hiroko Yamamoto, MD ( Aichi, Japan). There were 25 platform presentations and 15 posters, representing a 25% increase since the first meeting. In addition to several Japanese council members, ASNOS has the following council members from other Asian countries: May Yung Yen, MD ( Taipei, Taiwan), Wanicha Chuenkongkaew, MD ( Bangkok, Thailand), In Tack Kim, MD ( Seoul, Korea), Anuchit Poonyathalang, MD ( Bangkok, Thailand), Muhammad Sidik, MD ( Jakarta, Indonesia), Jesus M. Tamesis, MD ( Quezon, Phillipines), Rong Kung Tsai, MD ( Hualien, Taiwan), Goh Kong Yong, MD ( Singapore), Joong Ha Yoo, MD ( Seoul, Korea), and Zhang Xiaojun, MD ( China). The platform and poster presentations were all in English, which represented a commendable effort for the Indonesians, Chinese, Koreans, and Thais, who do not normally work in English. Many of the presentations were of high quality and contained scientific and clinical material of great interest. The ASNOS and JNOS platform sessions alternated, but because the JNOS presentations were in Japanese, ASNOS members tended to drift over to the posters during the JNOS sessions. At the closing reception, attendees were treated to a concert by a prize- winning flutist and two performers of the koto, a type of Japanese harp. The JNOS presented several of the ASNOS attendees with travel grants to defray the cost of coming to the meeting. The 3rd ASNOS meeting will be held in conjunction with the 16th Meeting of the International Neuro- Ophthalmology Society in Odaiba, Japan, November 29 to December 2, 2005. Jonathan D.
