Thesoil is fine grain loamy-sandlittered on its surface with small limestone pebbles (< 5 cm). Because the groundsurfaceis largely open to the sun (canopy coverless than 30%), large patches of Juniperus communis and Arctostaphylos patula are present; elsewhere grasses and forbs and/or fallen woody debris cover the open ground. Considerable downed small trees, both pines and aspen, and sometimes densely packed fallen limbs, provide for abundant woodycover on the ground. Understory plants include at least two species of bunch grasses, yarrow, heliptrope, cinquefoil, dandelion, and astragalus, with few to no individual plants of which are in flowerat this time of the year.
