Show 160 COMMON VINE. ness and impolicy of such envious jealousy. Peace and good will should prevail throughout the world, and we shall ever find, that if our neighbours the French be rich, they would be less inclined to do us an injury and go to war than when poor; andit is worthy of remark, that the french once thought them. selves so wretched in their own poorsoil, that they invaded Italy, and, bringing thence some vines, the whole country has become a vineyard, and more delicious wine is produced in France alone than in all the world beside. In Italy anuseful oil is drawn from the grape steies. In order to separate the seeds from the husks atid refuse matter, the mash is put into a bucket with some water and worked about with the hands until the seeds, from their superior weight, have fallen to the bottomof the vessel.. They are then to be removed anddried in the sun, or by any other way, as soon as possible: when a sufficient quantity is collected, the whole is to be groundin the same kind of mill that is used for hemp- andcole-sced: being then cold drawn, a fine oil’ is procured, whichis scarcely distinguishable from commonolive oil. The refuse matter, being scalded in alittle hot water, yields a fresh portionof oil, though of an inferior guality, which burns excellently well in a lamp, giving out no unpleasant odour, and verylittle smoke. I recollect somewhere to have read of a person who tookthe loppings or pruniugs of the vine and made excellent vinegar from the same, and even wine with the aid of sugar. COMMON LUNGWORT.
