Show RTVER It had been unearthly quiet, but with the earliest hint of dawn first one bird and then another broke into song. The clean cold air was slowly transfused with light. I'd struck an odd balance in my own mind. "You know what, Stockdale," I said. "I'm not crazy. I'm just into something most people aren't into." When he stopped laughing, Stockdale said, "I've got to drive on." I thanked him for the ride. "Take it easy," he said. "And be careful." Stockdale drove away. I dragged Thor into the boat and got in and rowed across the marina. Thor's legs shook and his first trip on water made him as jumpy as a cat. He didn't know what to make of it, but I could tell he didn't like it much. I felt as calm as a summer's morning. The fear was gone. I felt like I was back home. -144- |
