Show RIVER walls. What I'd grown up with all my life seemed unfamiliar and distant, and when I came to know it again, I saw it in a different way. Those autumn weeks on the river became in memory more dreamlike and perfect. Rosie and I looked back on them as a golden source, but whatever it was that we'd gained on the Mississippi, we'd lost something too. In a way we couldn't even recognize, the river had laid us under a curse. Once you've lived where even the passage of time is a joy, if s hard to be earthbound again. The glowing memory of how we had lived and loved made everything else seem empty by comparison. -108- |
