Show RIVER space. Rosie stood on the bow with a lantern and warned me about whatever she could see in the murk, which wasn't much. Finally we could see lights on shore and I began steering straight for them. I heard Rosie call, "Watch out!" and I instinctively cut to port: on my right the broken trunks of trees lopped off just above the water loomed up from the stump field we'd narrowly missed. I cut back the engine and felt my way through the thick night. At last we saw the light of a lantern on a dock and heard Rick and Vince calling to us. When we finally landed I was stone sober and swore I'd never disregard John Adams' warnings again. -70- |
