We were on the north side at that time; we hadn't crossed the river yet; come south and east; we hadn't yet crossed it. " Q. I am a little puzzled. Do I understand the witness to say he went from Bluff to rescue this band of emigrants? Now, to get on the Escalente side he had to cross the Colorado River. " A. That was our second trip. We went back to Iron County, left there on the 14th of November, 1879, to re- trace out steps to get back to the previous location, where we had located on the San Juan River, brought a big delegation to help settle on that rich soil we called it. " R. 548. During the first trip the emigrants came into the San Juan country at Bluff after crossing the Colorado River at Lees Ferry. The first trip was a kind of prospect party to see whether it was fit for colonization scheme. The second trip consisted of the colonizers and went to the Hole- in- the- Rock crossed the Colorado River by ferry and went to Bluff overland by team and wagon.
