Show 197 trip from Bluff to Mexican Hat, by boat. R. 466. Trouble with sand bars was encountered during the high stage of water in the month of June unless the water was very high. Sand bars were nor frequent during ordinary high water, occurring possibly fifteen or twenty times on the trip. Trouble with rocks was also encountered, the boat drifting into the rocks because of the swiftness of the stream, and ordinarily damaging the boat. R. 466- 467. " Q. Well, about how many times in the month of June in that twenty- five miles that you hit a sand bar? " A. I suppose fifteen or twenty. " Q. What difficulty did you run into with the rocks? " A. The boat would drift in on the rocks, and you couldn't help yourself sometimes, and generally have a smash- up then." R. 467. During low water in August and other low water months, more difficulties were encountered; rocks are worse and sand bars more frequent, requiring about fifteen hours to make the trip of twenty- five miles. " Q. Take August then. Tell me how a trip down there in August is different than one in June. " SPECIAL MASTER: If it is. BY MR. BLACKMAR: " Q. If it is. " A. The water is low then, and you are running on to the rocks all the time, got to pry it off the rocks and have considerable trouble. " Q. What about sand in low water? " A. Well, the sand is worse then on account of being very little water on top of the sand, you know." R. 468. |
