Show THE CHURCH REVIEW. <br><br> them through the whole campaign. <br> Now in this city, in Salt Lake, in the other cities, we desire to see wholly and entirely, the destruction of the liquor traffic, the suppression of gambling and the absolute and omnipresent supremacy of law; we desire those men nominated, supported and elected who desire to see the same thing. Well, Endeavorers, if that is so, do your duty; if you will only do that, and all the people of the Christian church will do that, it most surely will come to pass, when the judges of election come to count the votes, they will be able to tell the ballots of the saloon-keeper and his supporters from those of the preacher and the supporters of the church, because of the overwhelming victory of the candidate for decency and temperance, and law and order. <br> One of the grave evils of our time is the withdrawal of a considerable class from the exercise of citizenship. Says Stead, "Citizenship is a trust, the faithful discharge of which is a religious duty. Citizens who stay at home while crooks elect aldermen are worse than the crooks.... Boodlers have robbed Christ's poor because Christians were singing hymns and saying prayers when they ought to have been voting and canvassing and attending primaries and conventions." Endeavorers this is true, every word of it; many are already aroused along this very line. Some are already saying, if necessary in the name of public honor and righteousness let the Christian Endeavor society become a campaign club, and the prayer meeting a caucus. In my last charge, in Prohibition South Dakota, this last was once practically done. The caucuses were appointed for prayer meeting hour. The "blind pig" element were working to put up a liquor man who would allow liquor to be sold in defiance of the law. Your speaker like one of old, nailed his message to the church door, telling his people that pastor and elders had gone to the caucus to help nominate a man for decency and temperance, law and order. Endeavorers, you hold the balance of power, and if you, both male and female, will unite to exert the power at your command, you can join in raising a blast of public sentiment along these very lines that even the politicians must bend before. Let us have a quickening of the public conscience; that is what we need, all of you will grant that, and if that is so, and if there is to be the sorely leaded revival of consciousness among us, you as Christian Endeavorers and Christian citizens must lead in it. This fall, you will go to the ballot box at the election; I beseech you then, to recognize the supreme ruler, not only of this nation, but of all nations, and appeal to him for his blessing. Take your Bibles, and in the light of His word make up your mind, as to what is your duty as citizens. Remember that the highest kind of a patriot is a Christian patriot. Remember this-then we will have at the ballot boxes, citizens who will be governed by moral convictions rather than by party expediency; we will then have citizens who will at any and all costs, stand by God and the right, we will then have decency and temperance, a clean administration, law and order will be enthroned, and righteousness will exalt us as a nation. <br> May God hasten it in His time. <br><br> General Church Notes. <br> METHODIST. <br> The New England Conference pays this year $30,806 for missions. <br> The Methodist church in Chicago has 150 churches and missions, with 23,500 members. Services are conducted in seven different languages. <br> The International Epworth League convention meets at Chattanooga June 26th. <br> Rev. Dr. Wynn was one of Gen. Morgan's favorite [scouts] on his noted raid into Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. Rather than surrender he swam the Ohio river horseback. He died at Nashville Tenn. April 18th. <br> Bishop A. G. Haygood will deliver the anniversary address at De Pauw University, on commencement day. Bishop Haygood is an officer of the M. E. church, South. This fraternal. <br> Bishop Joyce preached for the Southern Methodist church at Dalton, Ga., recently. The society was in a financial strait and the Bishop helped them out. This is fraternal to. <br> Broad minded people say the world is growing better all the time. <br> Bishop Thoburn is in this country again to help in the work of raising missionary funds. <br> Conferences are in session as follows: Maine, Iaco, Me., Bishop Bowman; North Dakota, Larmier, N. D., Bishop Warren. <br> The Boston University has received a valuable Siamese edition of the complete canon of the sacred books of the Southern Buddhists, from His Majesty, Somdetch Phro Paramindr Moha Chulaloukoen Phra Chulr Chom Klao, King of Siam, in commemoration of the twenty-sixth anniversary of his coronation. The work fills thirty-nine volumes. <br><br> BAPTIST. <br> Dr. E. T. Hiscox in a discussion of the Relation of Woman's Missionary Societies to the General societies deprecates the existence of different societies doing the same or similar work in the same field and making distinct and separate appeals to the same churches and individuals for the same cause. <br> Hon. J. M. Hoyt of Cleveland O. passed to his reward last week. For years he has been one of the most prominent and honored Baptist laymen. He was the [father(?)] one of Rev. Wayland Hoyt of Minnesota. <br> Rev. E. B. Jones becomes pastor at Owatonna, Minn. <br> Dr. Lorimer recently devoted a service to the life and work of the Rev. A. B. Earle the evangelist. <br> Boston has recently done herself honor in the special honor given to Dr. S. F. Smith now nearly eighty eight years of age an author of "America." <br><br> "Every Christian should live so that those who follow him will travel toward heaven." <br> "No religious act should ever be performed in a way to make the world think that serving God is hard work." <br><br> |
