THE CHURCH REVIEW. <br> PRESBYTERIAN. <br> VOL. 3. / SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, MAY 5, 1895. / No. 19. <br><br> FIRST PRESBYTERIAN. <br> The subject for the prayer meeting at 7:45 next Wednesday evening will be, Jacobs Vision and its Lessons, Genesis 28:10-22. <br> The business meeting of the Senior Endeavor Society will be held after the prayer meeting next Wednesday evening, when the roll will be called. <br> The people went home from church rejoicing last Sunday morning because, under Dr. Silver's skillful and efficient leadership, they raised $720 in about thirty minutes, which was $70 more than was needed to square up all the accounts of the church. We do not doubt that special blessing will come to those who helped on this good work. <br> Next Tuesday evening from 8 to 10:30, the members of the church and congregation are invited to a social gathering in the lecture room of the church, to be given by the Men's League. There will be an interesting program, followed by refreshments. <br> The Ladies Aid Society will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, giving a lunch to the gentlemen from 12 to 1:30. The ladies in the congregation who are comparatively strangers are specially invited. <br> In addition to Mr. Pierce, Mr. J. R. Bowdle, of this city, and Mr. Ivins, of St. George, made strong and earnest speeches in the Convention in favor of submitting prohibition to the people. One of the most unworthy speeches against it was by Mr. Thatcher of Logan. Think of an apostle speaking on the side of the saloon keepers and ignoring the petition of over 10,000 voters that prohibition might be submitted to the people as a separate article. The more apostles the world has of that kind the worse off it is morally. <br> Dr. Sheldon Jackson, the heroic superintendent of Presbyterian missions in Alaska the past fifteen years, is expected here next Saturday morning, May 11th. He is planning to be here over the Sabbath and will speak in our church next Sabbath morning on Alaska. He is worth going miles to hear. <br> It is no wonder the teachers and students in the Collegiate Institute shouted and cheered and rang the bell over the news of Otto Hauerbach's victory in the Inter-State oratorical contest at Galesburg, Ills., on Thursday evening. Otto graduated with honor form the Institute in the class of '91. He was a faithful, earnest, Christian student, having united with the church in March, '91. No more popular student ever left the school, for he was beloved by everybody. His victory is a great one, for he first had to contend with the colleges of Illinois to secure the honor of representing that state. Then he had to contend Thursday evening with the successful representatives of nine other states. His victory shows the merit of persistent hard work. May it make him humble rather than proud. <br><br> WESTMINSTER. <br> The Ladies Aid Society gave a most successful supper on Thursday evening. There were over seventy present and between $12 and $13 was realized towards the purchase of the new carpet for the church. <br> The collection for the Ministerial Belief fund will be taken on Sunday May the 19th. <br> The next meeting of the Ladies Missionary society will be held on Thursday May 9th at 2:30 at the home of Mrs. Rodda, 311 South Seventh West Street. Papers will be read on Siam and Laos with talks to follow on the work being carried on at those places. <br> Recollect the Y. P. S. C. E. "Experience social" tomorrow night at 8:30 at Mrs. Hurley's 470 W. 4th South street. The business meeting precedes the social at 7:30. <br> The subject for prayer meeting on Wednesday will be the 55th chapter of Isaiah. Teachers meeting is immediately afterwards. We had a grand study of the lesson last week. Those who have not been present hitherto must come and see. <br><br>
