| Abstract |
Hogan (b. 1917) was in Woods Cross, Utah. He discusses farming, family, growing up years, the Depression, schooling and jobs. He joined the Navy in the fall of 1935 and received basic training at the Naval Training Station in San Diego, California. He was assigned to the USS Borie and achieved 3rd class petty officer in fire control. Assigned to the USS Lawrence for decommissioning. Finished his 4-year service on the USS Winslow until discharged. He returned to Salt Lake City and worked for Western Electric until January 20, 1942 when he joined the Army Air Corps. He first was sent to Mesa, Arizona, then Oxnard, California, for Primary training in Stearmans. He continued at Merced, California, for basic, flying BT-13s, and took advanced training in Stockton, California, flying T-6s. He was sent to Indianapolis, Indiana, to check out on C-47s and was then assigned to the 27th Troop Carrier Squadron at Pope Field. He joined the 314th Troop Carrier Group and was ordered overseas, where he was based in Kairouan, Tunisia, ferrying gliders. He participated in Husky One into Sicily, then moved to England to prepare for the D-Day Invasion. He describes his activities and experiences in and out of combat. He participated in Market Garden before returning to the States in December 1944. He was assigned to Stockton, California, as an instructor and was discharged in the summer of 1945. Mr. Hogan stayed in the Reserves and reapplied for his commission in 1947. He was assigned to Hill Field as chief of maintenance and retired as a lieutenant colonel with more than thirty years of service. Interviewed by Benjamin J. Bahlmann. 122 pages. |

Show FLOYD H. HOGA 21 PT B R 2002 BJB: I didn t know that. FHH: So they started loading the other airplanes. When we got loaded we had twentyfour troopers each and I had four or six parapacks under the airplane. I was overloaded more than any mission I ever flew. I was the last one to take off that night. Bonsac was out of it and Tappan, the squadron commander, was leading us. We'd been briefed very briefly, before we left that we're going to navigate up the coast of Italy, which is all enemy territory. You have to stay away from the coast, but you've got to stay close enough so you can see enough of the coast to navigate. When you get up there, you're going to find that the Salemo beachhead is around a cove, around a peninsula that's 3,500 feet high. The intelligence officer said, "Please don't try to go over that peninsula. Go around the peninsula and you'll find the invasion fleet and you'll see them and you'll pick up your heading and find the check points and the DZ." Well, because Tappan knew about the fiasco in Sicily, for some unknown reason, he was worrying about the barrage balloons, which were put up on 1,000 feet of cable to keep the Stukas away. But they promised that they'd all be closed hull down on deck. Well, as we approached, I'd been having trouble. As I took off that night and as I got halfway down the runway (the runway went right to the coast and dropped off a cliff about a hundred feet) my one engine started detonating, backfiring. So you don't get good power out of it. I had to make a decision just like that: Do I try and stop or do I go? I knew if I tried to stop I wouldn't make it and we'd go off the cliff. Anyhow, I told the co-pilot, "Hang on. We're going." We just barely got enough speed to get off there and drop down and pick up again. All night I chased that formation. I'd catch up with them and then I'd lose them, because I'd keep losing the power. 64 |
