| Abstract |
Hogan (b. 1917) was in Woods Cross, Utah. He discusses farming, family, growing up years, the Depression, schooling and jobs. He joined the Navy in the fall of 1935 and received basic training at the Naval Training Station in San Diego, California. He was assigned to the USS Borie and achieved 3rd class petty officer in fire control. Assigned to the USS Lawrence for decommissioning. Finished his 4-year service on the USS Winslow until discharged. He returned to Salt Lake City and worked for Western Electric until January 20, 1942 when he joined the Army Air Corps. He first was sent to Mesa, Arizona, then Oxnard, California, for Primary training in Stearmans. He continued at Merced, California, for basic, flying BT-13s, and took advanced training in Stockton, California, flying T-6s. He was sent to Indianapolis, Indiana, to check out on C-47s and was then assigned to the 27th Troop Carrier Squadron at Pope Field. He joined the 314th Troop Carrier Group and was ordered overseas, where he was based in Kairouan, Tunisia, ferrying gliders. He participated in Husky One into Sicily, then moved to England to prepare for the D-Day Invasion. He describes his activities and experiences in and out of combat. He participated in Market Garden before returning to the States in December 1944. He was assigned to Stockton, California, as an instructor and was discharged in the summer of 1945. Mr. Hogan stayed in the Reserves and reapplied for his commission in 1947. He was assigned to Hill Field as chief of maintenance and retired as a lieutenant colonel with more than thirty years of service. Interviewed by Benjamin J. Bahlmann. 122 pages. |

FHH: Before we ever left the States-years ago, and I've still got it in an old walletwe were sitting in the barracks at Lawson Field. The guys, my buddies these four staff sergeants and four officers, and I said, "I'll tell you what's going to happen." They said "What?" I said "I'll bet you five dollars our first mission"-we didn't know we were going overseas then-I said, "Our first mission is going to be landing paratroopers on Sicily." And my buddy Fred Evans said, "I'll bet you five dollars." So I've got the five dollar silver certificate that he pulled out and signed it, and he's got his name on it and signed it, five dollars, and he finally paid me off after we went to Sicily. What happened in Sicily-I could tell you stories all day-but, personal stories like flying gliders. I loved to fly the glider. Most fighter pilots wouldn't touch a glider. BJB: Did you get inside one? FHH: Fly it as a pilot. Most of them hated gliders. When we were slack times there at Kairouan, I got a couple of my buddies, "Hey, come give me a tow." Just get in the airplane. Like I told you, Clayton Styles said I could fly anytime anywhere and I did that all during the war. Nobody ever stopped me. Nobody ever questioned me. So the guys towed me up. I got in the glider with a crew chief of the glider and I said, "Take me up to 10,000 feet." So it took them about an hour to get me up to 10,000 feet. When we got to 10,000 feet, I cut loose. Suddenly, you know it's going like this, wummmm, wind rattling on that canvas. And it suddenly gets very, very still, just quiet and beautiful. It was the most wonderful feeling in the world. It took me forty minutes to come down from there and I'd just fly around the countryside. 53 |
