| Abstract |
Hogan (b. 1917) was in Woods Cross, Utah. He discusses farming, family, growing up years, the Depression, schooling and jobs. He joined the Navy in the fall of 1935 and received basic training at the Naval Training Station in San Diego, California. He was assigned to the USS Borie and achieved 3rd class petty officer in fire control. Assigned to the USS Lawrence for decommissioning. Finished his 4-year service on the USS Winslow until discharged. He returned to Salt Lake City and worked for Western Electric until January 20, 1942 when he joined the Army Air Corps. He first was sent to Mesa, Arizona, then Oxnard, California, for Primary training in Stearmans. He continued at Merced, California, for basic, flying BT-13s, and took advanced training in Stockton, California, flying T-6s. He was sent to Indianapolis, Indiana, to check out on C-47s and was then assigned to the 27th Troop Carrier Squadron at Pope Field. He joined the 314th Troop Carrier Group and was ordered overseas, where he was based in Kairouan, Tunisia, ferrying gliders. He participated in Husky One into Sicily, then moved to England to prepare for the D-Day Invasion. He describes his activities and experiences in and out of combat. He participated in Market Garden before returning to the States in December 1944. He was assigned to Stockton, California, as an instructor and was discharged in the summer of 1945. Mr. Hogan stayed in the Reserves and reapplied for his commission in 1947. He was assigned to Hill Field as chief of maintenance and retired as a lieutenant colonel with more than thirty years of service. Interviewed by Benjamin J. Bahlmann. 122 pages. |

Show FLOYDH.HO 21 T B R20 2 FHH: Oh yes. We were here the whole weekend. Friday night till Monday m ming. When we took off, got just about over Bountiful here, just going over the mountains ju t climbing to get over the mountain. And all of a sudden he let out an oath and he just dove the airplane over and went, chung. And all my buddies were back-this was a sleeper airplane, United Airline sleeper with bunks. We had about six pilots with us who were just coming for the ride. They were in these bunks and it threw them all out and all over the place. I looked there and I thought, this guy's gone crazy. And he was cussing. And I said, "What's the matter? What's the matter?" He said, "I didn't send the RON message. We've got to go back." BJB: Which is? FHH: At that time, wherever you were every night you had to send a message back to your headquarters, give you your airplane number and say, "Remaining overnight in X airport." And he forgot to send it. But hindsight wouldn't have made a bit of difference, because I didn't do that many times later. But, anyhow, we went back and landed, sent the RON message and took off again. I'm still shaking my head about that. So we left Indianapolis and I was assigned to the 2?1h Troop Carrier Squadron at Pope Field. That's where I joined a man named Clayton Styles, who was one of United Airlines most senior pilot. Clayton Styles was an absolutely great guy. He had something like 30,000 hours then. He had hair almost as white as mine, and he was only about ten years older than me. So we had great times at Pope Field and just one quick story. One day we got a call to move the whole squadron's airplanes to Mobile, Alabama, to the depot to have some work done. So Styles took charge and he went down to operations and checked the weather. The weather was terrible. It was a big cold front 40 |
