| Abstract |
Madsen (b. 1926) discusses his childhood in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was drafted into the army in August 1944 and received basic training at Camp Wolters, Texas. He was shipped to England and crossed the channel in an LST to Le Havre. In January 1945 he was assigned to the 3rd Army, 90th Infantry Division, 359th Infantry Regiment, B, in Belgium. Madsen describes his combat experience and his activities in post-war Europe. Interviewed by Benjamin Bahlmann. 85 pages. |

THI I THE PROJECT "SAVING THE LEGACY: AN ORAL HISTORY OF UTAH' WORLD WAR II VETERANS." TAPE No. 530-532. BB: Okay, today is September 6, 2002. We're in the home of Harold S. Madsen in Pleasant Grove, Utah. This is Ben Bahlmann conducting the interview. I'd like to know what date you were born and where. HSM: I was born April 23, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah. [turns off tape] BB: Okay, you said in Salt Lake City? HSM: Salt Lake City. BB: And how many in your family? HSM: My brothers and sisters? BB: Yes. HSM: There were eight in the family and I'm the oldest of eight, three boys and five girls. BB: And your parents' names? HSM: Harold Johannes Phillip, H.J. Madsen, and Helen Anna Sanders Madsen. BB: Did you say your father was originally ... HSM: Yes, he was born in Denmark, on the island of Fyn, not far from a little town called Odense. BB: Did he immigrate to the States himself, or did his family come over? HSM: He was the first one over and then his mother and brother and sisters followed. BB: How old was he when he came over? 1 |
