| Abstract |
Wayne Omer (b. 1921) details his genealogy and recalls his childhood in Holladay, Utah. He went to work for the FBI in 1941 and moved to Washington, DC. He enlisted in the Navy and begain flight training in Athens, Georgia. After being commissioned he transferred to the Marines and was shipped out to the Solomon Islands. After serving in the Pacific he was reassigned to a training mission in Santa Barbara, where he remained until the war ended. Other topics covered include serving in the Reserves, making jewelry, and working for Litton Industries. 75 pages. |

Show WAYNE A. OMER 17 20 1 the airport to the Navy unit and say, "Hey, I'd like to take that airplan . "You checked out?" "Yeah, I'm checked out okay." And I did this a few times if the Navy planes were sitting right there. But I went over and joined a fighter squadron and I'd never flown a fighter, but a guy that I got acquainted with- he would say: "Orner, why don't you come over and fly?" "You get paid?" "Yeah, you get pretty good pay for one weekend a month." So, I says "Okay." My wife wasn't very happy about it because we had five kids. So I went over there and joined this fighter squadron and they were flying the Grumman Bear Cat- the F-89-F- the last of the Grumman fighters. And it was an experience. Again, no check out. We just went out and flew it. And they had a book on it about this thick. About every tenth page there's big black marks: "Warning. Warning." And this guy, England, he was a professional pilot for the Dugway Proving Grounds, and I says, "Harold, look at all these!" I says, "What's all these warnings?" And he said, "Hell, don't pay attention." He said, "You better not read that book!" So I go over with him and they sign me up. Nobody asks any questions, you know, "When's the last time you flew?" "Oh, it was eight years ago." "But what the heck," you know. 61 |
