It was not part of the same tour, so It d have to be a couple of ear lat r. I pull d int New York and we had corresponded enough so I knew where they we re- I d nt a 1 tt r up to Canada. The next thing I knew, here comes down this ten year old girl to visit New York, only now she was about fifteen and, gee, I thought, why would her folks let her come down here all alone but there she was, so I showed her around New York and she went back home. Several months later, when I got back to New York, I got a letter inviting me up to their home in Canada. Only now she was eighteen and (laughs) Joan will never forget this, let me forget it, they had this photographer come and take a picture. It looks like a pre-wedding picture, you know, with the family here and Warren and this girl. She was a very charming girl, but her height was about four-foot-eleven and very tiny and petite and very attractive, but, oh, that was interesting. And then that's the last I ever heard of them again until after Joan and I were married. All of a sudden we get this phone call from the son. Now this was in 1953, so a lot of years have passed by. Korea's over and that, and he's coming through to go to BYU. So we visited with him and had that much contact with him, but have heard nothing since that time. But it was just a family that we met and, like I say, this other sailor and I wanted to help them out a bit. BBL: You helped them out. They got over to Canada. Is that where they stayed? WAR: Well, that's where they were the last we heard, when he came through to go to BYU. 42 |
