When we got ashore there in 1948, I remember going to a fantastic dinner over th re at a lovely restaurant. Had lobsters and they had a waiter behind each one of us so if y u e r ran out of butter or water, it was there. But the lobster came out, looked just like it was in the shell and the waiter deftly lifted off the shell and it was all cut and ready. They just lifted off the shell. You didn't have to strip anything, it was just there! It was deluxe. I think it cost five dollars or something. Funny how things stick in your mind. BBL: have to peel. WAR: Well, good lobster would, wouldn't it? Especially when you didn't Didn't do anything except eat. Then we kept on going around to a place that was called Ceylon then; it's now Sri Lanka. Again the officers were dined at the Navy embassy, I guess it was or whatever it's called at that level, they had us to a dinner. Just really deluxe and we got acquainted with smne of the folks there. And they said if you want to buy any jewels, let us know. We have this outlet that makes sure the jewels are genuine and they're at very good prices. So the next day I went out and I got a star sapphire. But Joan's birthstone is an opal. And, of course, I didn't even know Joan then, but I went and got these opals. They were unusually attractive and pretty and so I got, let's see, one, two, three, four-about eight of them. Some were little, some big, because I thought they could make earrings with some of them and two or three other things, at very nominal cost. So we get home and years later I get married and, oh, one of them, I had a ruby, I bought a ruby. So we get married and have our kids. The first one 37 |
