She had two pre-teen boys and they got so that they would go away weekends and have her stay and I'd have to stay With her (laughs) BBL: DOR: Oh, she'd stay at the house and you'd have to stay over there too? Yes. But n1y fmnlly probably had five little lGds and they had JUSt Inoved Into this hoine and I do ren1en1ber that I had to, It was a built In, well, It was a porch, but it was screened in and I had to scrub the whole everything. It was wooden slats and ceiling and I had to scrub that. That's all I did that whole week. It was rough. Then go hoine on the bus In the evening and con1e back In the n1on11ng. That was hard work. But we'd buy a new Easter outfit; we'd work the week before. BBL: DOR: About how much money did you make? What did a new dress cost? Probably two or three dollars, I don't know Arvella got pmd better than I did, but we'd buy a hat and a dress, heels, gloves and a purse. I've got soine pictures here of our Easter outfits. BBL: Ok. That was dunng high school and you would work dunng spnng break and n1aybe sun1Iner DOR: No, not In the summer Sumn1ers you just played. BBL: When you graduated from high school, 1942, the U S was Involved In the war In Europe and In Asia and you were saying ear her that all the boys were getting drafted. What did you do when you graduated fro1n high school? DOR: I can't ren1ember how soon, I probably got a Job nght away at Woolworth's and I ren1en1ber one Sunday, you had no choice you had to go In to take 14 |
