All say the money has been sent in, but I am unable to get hold of the gross amount. Of course a good deal more could have been done if the Executive Committee had taken more interest in the matter, but with the burden of the great debt upon them they have shown very little interest.
I find, as General Eaton has written you, that there is a prejudice at New York against the Academy under its present management and while I do not share their feelings, yet from their standpoint there is some justice in their feeling as they do. However, if the Academy can be taken under the wing of the College as a preparatory school, they have given me assurances that they will commence helping on salaries again.
To give you some idea of the times permit me to sat that the Theological Seminary at Omaha have had a paid collector out for one year and he has not raised $1,000. The financial agent and collector for the McCormick Seminary even, has utterly failed to raise money this past winter; not enough to pay his own salary. That will give you some idea of the times. We have simply got to wait and pray and work as best we can, until in the good providence of God these times pass over, and the Lord's treasury is again filled.
I hope to be with you the 25th, and* 26th and 27th** of May.

Very respectfully yours,
Sheldon Jackson*

* handwritten inserts in original typewritten document
** "and 27th" is typewritten but crossed out by author

|
Further Information |
In this letter to Robert McNiece, Sheldon Jackson reports on raised funds for a college and its teachers' salaries, and explains why contributions are scarce. These reasons include the scarcity of funds to be given in the first place and the prejudice against an academy, which Sheldon Jackson does not fully dwell on but does offer a solution. He suggests the college takes the academy as a preparatory school, for if the college does, as he was assured, then more donations will be made towards salaries. Sheldon Jackson then offers an example of a paid contributor who also is having a hard time earning funds due to the times, and then ends his letter by giving the dates he plans to visit with Robert McNiece. |
