Also yours of the 15th enclosing President Raymond's circular, for which accept my thanks. I wish to thank you and Mrs. Jackson most heartily for the $200 you sent to Treasurer Van Pelt to apply on the salary of Professor Sweazy and myself. It was very thoughtful and generous of you both, and cheered us up very much. To go 4 and 5 months without any salary is not a very cheerful condition to work under. But we have now been paid up to Oct. 1st. Mrs. Mr. Bailey** <br> Now in reference to the Chapel. You and Genl. Eaton and Mr. Bailey entirely misunderstood the action of the Trustees. While the action, if carried out, would indirectly benefit the 3rd Pres. Ch., we were looking after the interests of the College and not the interests of the Church. We were thereby providing a Church home in the neighborhood, for our Professors and students, and also a convenient chapel in the College building for the religious gatherings of the students. In one sense, there was but one chapel because there was but one individual building. The Chapel in the College building was auxiliary to the other, And it was not the intention to put up the separate building for a few years yet. But we declared our purpose, which we thought was in strict harmony with the Will. <br> But Mr. Ridour thinks the safe course is to put up one individual chapel on the College ground. Probably his judgment is correct. You and Mr. Bailey seem to have in need* a Church organization in the College ground. But no College that I know of undertakes to carry on a church organization.
