Show Mr. Jewell D. Hartin, Supervisor, who is now in charge of these Indians has been placed there, we understand, to try him out - to see if he is exactly the right man for the position- and with a view to his appointment as Superintendent if he proves to be all that is desired. The selection of a man to fill so important a post, where the responsibilities are so great, must necessarily be made with caution, but we suggest that the entire fitness of one cannot be judged when his authority is limited. Mr. Martin impresses us as capable and en-Tgetic, and apparently he hasa full appreciation of the responsibilities of the position, and a disposition to accomplish whatever is possibly.within his power for the Indians under his charge. He is liked Vj the Indians, and he possesses their confidence. If properly supported, he should accomplish much. He has submitted to us a list of what he considers pressing needs. This we enclose, (Exhibit A) but we shall deal only with those we deem of paramount importance. We urge the immediate appointment of llr. Martin, as Superintendent, and we recommend that his salary be increased to $££50.00 per year. If he proves to be the right man, this will be the best investment yet made from the Indian funds for the benefit of these Indians. |
