Show voter of the State. There seems to be no reason to doubt the logio of that proposition, but the Indians of Uintah and WaS'aife^. counties, Utah, are not reckoned among the constituency of the Utah delegation, and there is a growing constituency in those counties. Eo one familiar with conditions among the White River Utes, the Uncompaghres "and the Uintah Indians, no matter how altruistic may be his mood, can with honesty of purpose state that here the.white settler and the Indian have common ground. What the settler has acquired has been at the expense of toil and the privation of the pioneer, (assisted somewhat by reimbursable appropriations from Indian funds,) while the Indian has only sought seclusion from the encroachment of his white neighbor.. The aggressiveness of the one has only been met by the passive tolerance of the other, and the obligations of Government demand the fullest protection of the rights of its wards. Wot therefore, repeat our recommendation "The interests of the Indians should not be entrusted to any person having local affiliations or political obligations." |
