Show LITERATURE ABSTRACTS 127 Superior Ophthalmic Vein Enlargement and Proptosis Caused by Middle Cranial Fossa Lipoma. Howard GR, Nerad JA, Carter KD. Am J Ophthalmol 1990; 110: 705- 6 ( Dec). [ Inquiries to Dr. J. A. Nerad, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, IA 52242.] A 13- year- old girl developed proptosis of her right eye and was found to have a middle and posterior fossa mass on the left which was a lipoma. Computerized tomographic scanning also showed marked enlargement of the superior ophthalmic vein, which the authors feel resulted from pressure from the tumor on the cavernous sinus. Lyn A. Sedwick, M. D. Adenocarcinoma of the Stomach Confirmed by Orbital Biopsy in a Patient Seropositive for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Singer MA, Warren F, Accardi F, Sabatini M, D'Amico R. Am J Ophthalmol 1990; 110: 707- 9 ( Dec). [ Inquiries to Dr. R. A. D'Amico, Cabrini Medical Center, 227 E. 19th Street, New York, NY 10003.] A 36- year- old bisexual man had abdominal pain for a year and a work- up suggesting peptic ulcer disease. Orbital signs developed; biopsy of an orbital mass showed adenocarcinoma with features of gastrointestinal malignancy. Further work- up showed diffuse abdominal involvement with adenocarcinoma of the stomach. The authors postulate this rare orbital metastasis may have occurred because of an abnormal immune status of this patient, who was HIV- positive. Lyn A. Sedwick, M. D. Computed Tomographic Appearance of Extraocular Muscle Calcification in a Patient With Seropositive Trichinosis. Behrens- Baumann W, Freissler G. Am J Ophthalmol 1990; 110: 709- 10 ( Dec). [ Inquiries to Dr. W. Behrens- Baumann, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Goettingen, Robert- Koch- Str. 40, 0- 3400 Goettingen, Federal Republic of Germany.] Hallelujah! The first report I have seen with computerized tomographic pictures of a patient with trichinosis involving the extraocular muscles. Lyn A. Sedwick, M. D. Hydroxyamphetamine Mydriasis in Normal Subjects and Hydroxyamphetamine Mydriasis in Horner's Syndrome. Kuritzky S, Fish S. Am J OphthalmoI1990; 110: 716 ( Dec). With dismay you will read this letter to the editor, which laments the nonavailability of Paredrine since SmithKline Beecham stopped making it in 1989. The author asks whether Dr. Thompson and his associates might advise an alternative drug for pupillary drug testing in Horner's syndrome. Sadly, they cannot. Lyn A. Sedwick, M. D. Editorial Comment: Cocaine drops still make this diagnosis! Lyme Disease: Neurologic and Ophthalmic Manifestations. Winterkorn JMS. Surv Ophthalmol 1990; 35: 191- 204 ( Nov- Dec). [ Reprint requests to Dr. J. M. S. Winterkorn, North Shore University Hospital, 300 Community Drive, Manhasset, NY 11030.] This article catalogues the reported neurologic and ophthalmologic manifestations of Lyme disease ( 81 references). The author gives appropriate critique and comment on the reviewed literature, which is also presented in table form, based on clinical findings. Lyn A. Sedwick, M. D. [ Reprints to Dr. P. W. Brazis, Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, 4500 San Pablo Road, Jacksonville, FL 32224.] This clinical pathological correlation- like article is nice, not just for what it directly sets out to doto discuss the POEMS syndrome ( the condition the patient had)- but also for the excellent discussion JClin Neuro- ophthalmol, Vol. 11.
