Description Teaching Arabic in the United ·States is relatively new. The Studies on the Near and Middle East in the United States before World War II were primarily focused on biblical studies. Most of these studies were in theological seminaries out of which grew' what is called departments of Semitic languages, with which Arabic became associated. There is no definite time as to when Arabic was formally taught in this country.
