Show LITERATURE ABSTRACTS 141 rior optic neuropathy was compared to that of 23 patients with arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy and 122 normal subjects. Optic nerve photographs were reviewed stereoscopically without knowledge of the diagnosis by two of the authors, who used slightly different criteria to judge the cup and came up with consistently different results between observers, but also significant differences between their judgment of these three groups of optic nerves with fellow eyes of nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy always having smaller or nonexistent cups. It is one of the more carefully designed studies attempting to prove this relationship of small optic nerve cup and the development of ischemic optic neuropathy. LYl1 A. Sedwick, M.D. Looking But Not Seeing: Attention, Perception, and Eye Movements in Simultanagnosia. Rizzo M, Hurtig R. Neurology 1987;37:1642-8 (Oct). (Re-print requests to Dr. Rizzo, Department of Neurology, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA 52242.) Simultanagnosia is a form of visual disorientation in which patients complain of the apparent disappearance from direct view of stationary objects. The authors studied three patients with this syndrome. All three had bilateral strokes in the superior visual association cortices on computed tomography. All three had good vision. The patients were asked to follow a central target and eye movement recordings were performed. Even when the target disappeared from the patients' conscious experience, they continued to fixate on the target. Thus, they were looking at the target, but not seeing it. One minor drawback to this article was the lack of clinical details on the three patients. Individual case histories would have given the readers a better understanding of the clinical characteristics of patients with this fascinating syndrome. A further discussion of this topic may be found in a recent article by Trobe and Bauer (Seeing but not recognizing. Surv OphthalmoI1986;30:328-36). Walter M. lay, M.D. JCli" NeurQ-Ol'ht!w[l1lol.
