Show Journal of Clinical Neuro-ophthalmology 8(2): 111, 1988. Editorial Comment Amiodarone Optic Neuropathy © 1988 Raven Press, Ltd., New York We had the paper by Drs. Garrett, Kearney, and Schiffman reviewed by Dr. Brian R. Younge, who, in my opinion, might be referred to as "Joe Amiodarone." There have been several recent reports on this subject. Dr. Younge thought that this paper was very similar to another report: Feiner LA, Younge BR, Kazmier FJ, Strickler BH, Fraunfelder FT. Optic neuropathy and amiodarone therapy. Mayo Clin Proc 1987;62:702-17. However, he thought that although the reversible nature had been previously documented in the literature, the speculation that the lamellar inclusions that occur III in other neurons might also be occurring within the optic nerve head itself merited consideration as to the mechanisms of amiodarone optic neuropathy. Therefore, we are agreeing with Dr. Younge that the paper should be published, and here it is. We ask you, dear reader, to also give us some input via letters to the editor about the occurrence of other cases of optic disc swelling in patients on amiodarone (Cardarone) and also your thoughts on the mechanisms. Thank you! J. Lawton Smith, M.D. |
