In July 1857 the first division of the wanr, y of Utah", which numbered in all about 2500 men, arrived in Salt Lake City, sent by Preoident Buchanan, ostensibly as a posse corcitatus to sustain the authority of the newly appointed governor who was to supersede Brigham Young.
