Show 28 The women got out the sewing machine and started to work. Mama ripped the material, Lizy hemmed it, and Grandma cut the diapers apart from the continuous thread of the machine and folded them. As the afternoon wore on Eliza complained of cramps. "It's probably the same thing I had a few days ago, " Grandma said. "We'd better get you home and put your feet in a nice mustard bath. " Eliza's cramps were so bad they had to stop the buggy twice for her to recover, and when Grandma put her feet into the mustard bath the cramps developed into severe pains. "Maybe you're having a miss, " Grandma, said. "Oh, no. I don't think so. Ila's still nursing. " The women of that day didn't get pregnant so long as they were nursing babies. Therefore, some babies nursed until they were four or five years old. They didn't have the pill then. And they still nursed their babies. "Well, we'd better send Walter for Sister Gay, just to be on the safe side. " Grandma called Walter in from the field and sent him the two miles to town. He went grumbling about the funny notions of women, and not very fast because Old Mae had just had a colt. Grandma proceeded to get the water hot. "Come quick, " Eliza screamed at last from the bedroom, where Grandma had put her after the mustard foot bath. "I feel just like I did when Ila was born." |
