Show 211 "Papa, I can't find the horses, " said Grant. There was no answer. Papa was dead. When we looked up to see Ervin galloping along the lane we made some joke. "Here comes Speedy, " Macel said, because he was notoriously slow. He slid off his horse at the gate and panted up to us. "Uncle John's awful sick, and he's not expected to live, " he parroted. We exploded apart. Mama ran to the car. "Come with me, " she said to me. "Macel, call the doctor. " We raced to the car and the other girls ran to the telephone. A block away Mama slowed the car by Rosses'. Dan'l was out in the yard, but he was hard of hearing. "Dan'l, John is sick. Come and go with me. " "Heh?" said Dan'l, and Mama stepped on the gas. "I have to have a man with me, " she moaned. Before we came to the river bridge we saw Haaken Ross cultivating his beet field. "Come with us, Haaken, " Mama called. "Something's happened to John. Haaken dropped his lines, left the horses in the field and came on the run. When we got to the field, the car plunging along the lane, we found Grant sitting in the shade of the stable. Papa was stretched out before him, his head on Grant's lap. Grant looked sadly old and wise for a boy of thirteen. He was holding Papa's jaw in place. |
