Show 126 changed tires, with Mama silently praying they would make it in time. At last we got started again and were actually in the outskirts of Manti, passing a brickyard where a man was sitting on the fence. There was another report like a gunshot and Papa stepped on the gas. "Papa, aren't you going to stop?" Eldon finally queried. "Stop? What do you want to stop for ? Let that damn fool shoot at us again?" "That was another blowout, " said Eldon. Mama was less worried about the blowout than she was about Papa swearing in the same town as the temple was. We made it in the nick of time, though, and it was the greatest thrill of Mama's life. She had had a recurring dream for many years, of suddenly going into a room of her house which she had not known was there. This room was beautiful and immaculate, and it gave her a sense of peace to go into it. It was always the same, and she usually had this dream in times of stress and doubt. The day we went to the temple she recognized the experience, the place, immaculate and beautiful, as her "other room. " On the way back Papa met another car on a narrow place in the road. He pulled back on the wheel, pressed on the gas so that the car lurched forward and threw Sister Jackman against the door, but he didn't swear and nobody was hurt. |
