Show 127 Papa and John Parker were delegates to the Republican convention in Ogden and he made one of his famous stops in the midst of a crowd of pedestrians just pouring out of the convention hall. He was immediately surrounded by policemen, citizens shaking their fists at him, calling him such names as fool, lunatic and murderer. He was so shaken the officer ordered him out from behind the wheel. "Madam, do you drive?" he asked Mama, and she said yes, as she was the first woman driver in Joseph. "Then get behind the wheel. " The episode was the highlight of the convention, although nobody was hurt, and it was duly reported in the paper, with pictures. While they were near the capitol Papa and John Parker thought it might be a nice gesture if they should call on the Governor, since they had helped put him in office. They were intercepted by an aide, however, and asked what their business with the governor was. "We're Republicans, " Papa said. "We just wanted to visit him. " "Well, I'm sorry, gentlemen, " said the hireling. "The Governor's a very busy man." They came away feeling sheepish and told it on each other with ramifications, but when the Governor was up for re-election he came to Joseph and sought them out. "We should have told him we are very busy men, " opined John Parker after he had gone. |
