At several places the efforts made to put Indian children in the white public schools have met with failure, due to the antagonism of the State or Territorial authorities to the coeducation of whites and Indians in the same school. At other places the plan has been partially successful. Theoretically, the placing of Indian children in the white public schools is the most rapid process for civilization, but, practically, the great number who avail themselves of this privilege have little admixture of Indian blood and are of right, under the State and Terri-torial laws, entitled to such privileges without the payment of the bonus usually required of the Government.
