Show create the home- marked « In answer, we say it is the people of Utah who are dependent upon tne farms. These people may be classified as follows: ( a) 59,785 mine, mill and smeltermen and their families. Add 125,4- 50 people who live through serving them, you have a total of 185,235* ( b) 15,500 factory hands whose stuff is sold outside Utah and their families with an additional 28,472 who live through serving them - a total of 41,972. ( c) 11,488 coal miners and families whose coal is shipped outside the state, and by serving these miners 24,144 more people are supported - a total of 55,652. ( d) Transcontinental Transportation and Intermountain distribution likewise account for 62,313 mere, and the grand total of items a, b, c, and d is 325,152 people. This is the farmers home- market. 57% cf them are miners and metal producers, 13% manufacturers, and 11% coal miners - all told 81% are engaged in industry of one kind or another. The other 19% are engaged in through transportation or the inter- mountain distribution. It is clear to us all as to what we should do to expand our home- market. About one- eleventh of the agricultural lands of Utah have been redeemed up to 1930. While there is some dry- farming, the total acreage is not large in comparison to our possibilities. Two things are necessary for our lands to be redeemed. They are increase of population and increase of water. The following statistics indicate our growth in population from I85O to the present time.
