Show that in case of death, sickness or unemployment he need not worry as his family will be provided for. Even now our unemployed could be used to carry out such a scheme. In placing farmsteads of this kind on land now idle and adjacent to our cities our unemployed could be taken care of for all time for a little more than we are now spending to feed them. Why should not the State or the United States acquire Antelope and Fremont Islands and Promontory Point, all of which could be made into a public park and playground; also be used as a game sanctuary for our fast disappearing herds of antelope, buffalo, elk, deer, wild sheep and goats. Sage hens and grouse could be placed to increase and be used to stock the State* s hunting grounds. The shores of both the fresh water lake and of Great Salt Lake would be attractive for summer homes, bathing and boating. These parks could be made so attractive that tourists would come and the attention of the traveling public would be drawn to us. Transportation companies, hotels and businessmen would all profit. By moving the State penitentiary to Fremont Island the construction and maintenance of this whole project including the building of roads could be done for little more than we are now paying for the maintenance of these 300 prisoners in idleness and the work would be outdoor work and healthy. It is not competitive in that no one would be thrown out of work because of the fact the prisoners were doing it. For all time these prisoners would have a job that would be of benefit to everybody within the State. Location of the prison at Fremont Island would be ideal because of its isolation and the ease with which the prisoners could be guarded and taken care of. - x3 "• |
